Saturday’s show turned out to be one of those where things don’t quite fall into place as smoothly as anticipated, and I found myself hot, bothered and slightly bewildered at the volume of music I’d managed to leave unspun.

 

Having said that, I ask you or anyone you know to continue to ply me whatever noise you think might sound fresh and new on the radio on a Saturday night.  I want the sort of stirring stuff that prompts people to keep a pad and pen (or iPhone/Blackberry etc) next the radio in anticipation of jotting down bits and bobs and finding the hot stuff for themselves.

Xfm New Noise Tracklist: Saturday 8th March 2008

 

On Tuesday I was stuck in one of those uninspired moods.  I listened to piles and piles of new stuff hoping to find something that would grab me by the throat, extinguish the gloom and rekindle musical delight (in much the same way this amazing new music from Grizzly Bear did last week).

 

It took a while, but in the event the epiphany finally arrived somewhere around midnight, whilst listening to X-Posure on Xfm.  Mr Kennedy had Guy Garvey in to talk us through the brand new Elbow album ’The Seldom Seen Kid’, and as it turned out both the playback interview and the new record itself delivered on every conceivable level.  If there’s one thing better than hearing a magical album, it’s hearing the thoughts, ideas and inspiration behind each and every track, as you hear them for the very first time. (The fact that Garvey is so articulate, witty and warm certainly helps).

 

Other than the ace single (’Grounds For Divorce’) I hadn’t heard any other new Elbow material - and had only caught an irritatingly short-sighted, almost sneering review in a London freesheet - so wasn’t entirely sure what to expect.  Without descending into mindless hyperbole I strongly recommend listening back to the fascinating interview again (here for the interview on its own, or here for the whole show), and hopefully you’ll end up as inspired, refreshed and hopeful as I was.

Afternoon!

 

I have to say, a fortnight between shows served as both a blessing and a curse.

 

While constraints of time forced me to leave stacks of unplayed goodies festering in the bag(s) this week, the very welcome arrival of brand new LCD Soundsystem, Midfield General, a Skull Disco 12" and a knee-trembling disco beast from some Germans named Motor City Drum Ensemble (not to mention F*cked Up covering Justice), meant my face was grinned clean out of shape for 240 minutes straight.  I hope the same can be said for those that listened.  If you were out on Saturday, or were just doing something else at home, the whole show can be heard via the sparklingly fresh new Xfm website, at the listen again player

 

All in all, I can't wait to get back in the (slightly dog-eared) hot seat and unleash a frighteningly great new track by Grizzly Bear, an amazing psych mix which'll sound sublime in the midnight hour, another slab of ear-piercingly wonky beat from Plus Move and some blistering new be your own PET.
